The Significance of Homeward's B Corp Certification and Frequently Asked Questions

Jennifer Schneider, MD, MS
CEO and Co-Founder of Homeward

Homeward Health® is now B Corp™ Certified – a milestone that is not just a badge of honor, but a testament to our mission and a reflection of our core values of curiosity, inclusivity, commitment, intentionality and remaining undaunted. These values serve as our guiding star in our journey towards creating a healthier rural America.

B Corp certification is a designation that recognizes a company for their social impact and serving as a force for good. I co-founded Homeward with these principles in mind; to ensure everyone – regardless of where they live – has access to high-quality care and doing so in a way that uplifts rural communities. I truly believe that rural communities are critical to the fabric of American culture, which is something I can personally attest to as someone who proudly grew up in the small town of Winona, Minnesota.

At Homeward, we have the unique ability to make an impact in the lives of the nearly 60 million Americans living in these rural communities, where healthcare access is scarce due a number of factors; clinician shortages, hospital closures and geographic distribution. Rural communities have a 23% higher mortality rate due to these factors and more. Homeward’s B Corp certification is another nod to the critical importance of addressing the challenges in rural America head on, and our commitment as an organization to transforming healthcare delivery in a responsible, ethical, and sustainable way.

We are no strangers to the impact of recognizing the importance of both purpose and profit. Homeward launched as a public benefit corporation, with the purpose of improving healthcare experience and outcomes in rural America. Likewise, our employee benefits philosophy – and our comprehensive benefits program – reflects this. Homeward is committed to providing our employees with a highly competitive benefits package that supports overall well-being through the promotion of psychological, physical, financial, social, and intellectual health. Homeward believes that a healthy and secure workforce is best able to contribute toward our public benefit purpose and our corresponding vision, mission and values.

At Homeward, we are intentional about hiring locally in the communities we proudly serve. Trust and partnership is a critical component of our model, and we understand the importance of hiring essential team members embedded in rural communities make all the difference, both from an economic and societal perspective.

This certification is a true achievement, and a promise that we will continue to lead with purpose and intention, creating lasting, positive impact in the communities and members we serve.

What is the difference between a public benefit corporation and a B Corporation?

B Corp certification and Public Benefit Corporations (PBC) are separate recognitions with similar underlying principles. Public benefit corporations are companies created to generate social and public good, and to operate in a responsible and sustainable manner, whereas B Corporations are certifications that demonstrate a company meets specific high standards for social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency.

Both designations reflect Homeward’s core values and dedication to uplifting communities and serving as a force for good in order to improve health outcomes of those in rural areas where access is scarce or limited.
